FAQ
How Do I Join?
In order to join, you must be a current Ohio State student. Prospective members should attend the first meeting of the year in August to learn more. However, new members are accepted at any point in time. If you are interested in joining or have questions about the team, please contact Myranda at McDaniel.823@osu.edu. There is a yearly fee of $75 for all members that funds horse maintenance, equipment, and team events. To be considered a competitive member, you must be an undergraduate student, attend meetings regularly, participate in volunteering, and be able to fulfill any financial obligations. If you would like to schedule a barn tour or find out more, visit our Contact Us page!
Are There Tryouts?
Because we are a club sport, we do not have tryouts. Show entries are based on a variety of factors determined by our coach before each event; all members have the chance to be competitive. To be considered a competitive member, you are required to ride twice per week. Transportation to the facility for lessons is available for students without vehicles.
What Do I Show In?
We show equitation in various divisions. At the beginning of the year, there is a form to fill out which puts you in a specific division based on your experience. IHSA provides a survey for riders to fill out in order to know which division(s) the rider will be placed in which can be accessed here.
A brief description of the divisions:
Introductory Equitation on the Flat: For those that have little to no riding experience.
Pre-Novice/Novice Equitation on the Flat: For those who have had little to no show experience at rated shows.
Limit Equitation Flat/Fences: For those who have won no more than 6 classes over fences 3' or higher at recognized shows.
Intermediate Equitation Flat/Fences: For those who have won no more than 6 classes 3'6" or higher at recognized shows.
Open Equitation Flat/Fences: For those who have won more than 6 classes over fences 3'6" or higher at recognized shows.
Do I Need To Be Competitive?
Nope! Although we encourage everyone to show, it is not required. We have several non-competitive members who take only lessons and participate in team events.
Do I Need To Bring My Own Horse?
No, you do not. In the IHSA circuit, teams travel to other universities to compete at their barn. The host college provides all the horses and equipment necessary for the show. Competitors catch-ride a randomly-selected horse for each class and immediately go show! There is a possibility that you can board your horse at our facility if you would like to bring it to school with you. Please contact us if you are interested in boarding.
